My So-Called Life
I was born and raised in Calgary, AB, Canada I am now 27 years old and finally figured out what it is I want to do when I grow up.
I have a Degree in Marketing from the University of Lethbridge and several years in the workforce behind me. I have been in retail, restaraunts, ski hills, golf courses, hotels, marketing, and a stint in an HR firm in one of those great big office towers in downtown Calgary.
I went to University because it was the thing to do. I went into Business because I didn’t think I wanted to do anything else. I held a childhood dream for very long time of becoming Angela Bower from Who’s the Boss and owning my own Advertising Agency.
My parents have both been self employed entreprenuers since I can remember, and I was going to do the same. Bottom line… I didn’t want to work for anybody but myself. I hated the idea of having a boss. I hated the idea of being told when to be there and what to do all day.
However, we all have to start somewhere and I started with that HR firm in downtown Calgary.
A Day in Life of Jill:
Picture this. Every morning, Monday through Friday, I would get out of bed at 5:30am, get in my little Volkswagon Rabbit at 6:30am, drive 1 hour (one way) with throngs of other commuters to work where I would park in my over priced parking spot that was a good 10 minute walk from my office. I would plant myself behind a computer for 8 hour of the day before I’d get back in my car, drive another hour home (more if there was snow), cook dinner (usually left overs or take out as I was too exhausted to even fathom the idea of cooking), watch an hour of so of mind numbing reality tv, and head to bed at 9:30pm ( like I was a kid again!) only to get up and do the same thing day after day after day!! *WARNING* If the day I just described sounds at all like you or gives you the same queezy feeling, then keep reading!
Awaken the Giant Within:
I have always felt that there had to be something more. Something more to life than the 9-5 rat race we are all trained to ‘embrace”. Don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that lifestyle. I did it and I think we all do it. It’s what we are “suppose” to do. It’s the way of the world and it has brought a lot of people great success. I envy those people for making it work for them. Kudos to you! But, for the rest of us ( and I do believe I am not the only one here), the thought of a 9-5 job (which is actually an 8-5 job nowadays, and the the same 8-5 job) 5 days a week, 50 weeks of the year for the next 45 years had me feeing pretty uneasy. I would constantly find myself saying “there has got to me more than this”… and guess what, there is!
It all starts with dreams! Goals and aspirations. It’s amibition, motivation, and faith. Faith in the idea that you can acheive whatever it is that makes you the happiest you could possibly be. If that happens to be the 9-5 rat race, then so be it! More power to ya. If it’s traveling the world, feeding the hungry, serving jet setters on a boeing 747, becoming the next Donald Trump, a Real Estate Mogul, Golf Professional, a Nanny, a Teacher, a Doctor .. I think you get the idea. Whatever it is that “floats your boat” and makes your body tingle with excitement… you need to know that you deserve nothing less. If you can dream it… it can and will be yours, but it isn’t a cake walk. I like this quote… ”If you are only willing to do what’s easy, life will be hard. BUT, if you are willing to do what’s hard, life will be easy”.
